Designed to track your freight as it moves within various locations in your company. It works by scanning freight and updating a web server so that at any time you can determine where your freight is. The status of jobs can be reviewed by using a search based on consignment number. Alternatively, a search can be done by entering a date range. 

Track and Trace
There are 3 main processes involved in tracking your freight: 

  1. Generate a consignment

  2. Status scanning

  3. Scanning into warehouse locations

1. Internet based consignment generation
By logging on to a web server you may generate a booking with a connote/labels.  

The following information is stored:

  • Sender details - Name and address

  • Connote number – The freight carrier consignment number becomes the basis for the internal tracking ID.

  • Purchase Order 

  • Invoice number

  • Comments

  • Number of consolidated items – This may be the original number of pallets

  • Number of individual items – This value represents the breakdown of the consolidated items

As the freight may be broken down into multiple movements the following details are also required for each destination.

  • Receiver’s details

  • Receiver’s count, type and a description of the items

Submitting a job using this screen will generate a document that can be printed to a local label printer. A number of formats are available including a simple consignment note along with formats designed especially for label printing. 

The labels are fixed to the parcels. Any time the parcels are processed from this point onwards it is by scanning.

2. Status Scanning
Scans may be sent via a wireless connection from your PDA. If you are not using a wireless setup, scanning occurs locally and the data is stored on the handheld PDA. Once placed into it’s cradle or attached via a USB connection, the system is then used to upload your data through to the internet. 

3. Scanning into warehouse locations 
The system offers the ability to receive goods into storage. This may be used where goods will be temporarily stored in a warehouse location. 

Scanning hardware
A number of hardware choices are available for different working environments: 

  • Keyboard wedge scanners: The simplest situation is a PC connected to the Internet. In this scenario a user logs onto the web page, then a keyboard wedge scanner is used to scan the barcode. The type of freight would determine whether this could be implemented. Large items may not be feasibly scanned from a cabled scanner. 

  • Batch scanners: These scanners would allow a user to scan the freight, and enter the name. However they would need to be reconnected to the PC to transfer the data.

  • WiFi scanners: May be used where a WiFi network has been set up. These scanners allow the user to scan freight and enter their name. The data is then updated in real time onto the Internet. For the user this is the most convenient method.
