How can a PDA help my business?

There are many different ways that a PDA can help you improve your business. These include:

Using a PDA can also give you the power to track your vehicles by utilising GPS (Global Positioning System).

What is a PDA?

PDA stands for "Personal Digital Assistant." A PDA is a handheld computer that may be used for any number of purposes. There are two main Operating Systems used on PDA's: Palm and Pocket PC. In the logistics industry, there are many types of PDA than may help to streamline your business.

These include:

  • Ruggedized PDA: Toughened so that it can be used in any environment such as the cab of a truck or in a warehouse

How will a PDA communicate with my server?

A PDA can communicate in many different ways. Below are a few of the options available:

  • GPRS: This stands for General Packet Radio Service. It is a wireless form of communication that is used to send and receive small bursts of data, such as e-mail and web browsing, as well as large volumes of data. GPRS is a mobile data service available to users of GSM and some mobile phones. It is set up with a data communications agent who will charge either by the amount of data which is transferred, or by the minute of connection time. This form of data communication is required where transfers over large physical distances are required. For example, GPRS is often used by courier companies to send and receive job details to drivers.

  • WI-FI: is the technology used by wireless local area networks. The range of a WI-FI signal is limited so this solution is useful in situations where data transfer is not required over large distances. EG: Signatures may be captured and stored on the PDA and then downloaded at the depot at the end of the day.

  • Cradle: Your PDA can be hard wired directly to a server using a cradle. Data is then exchanged with the PDA via the cradle.
